Created by Non-Profit Care Providers

SideLyer was created by care providers at Quest Inc., a501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Learn about Quest Inc.'s 60+ year legacy of compassion and care

A persistent challenge inspired the creation of the SideLyer. In the 1990s, many Quest Inc. residents could not be repositioned manually, which put them at risk for pressure ulcers. Embracing a culture of innovation, the Quest Inc. care staff partnered with a carpenter to build the first SideLyer: a custom wooden frame that used angled positioning to reduce strain and workplace injuries. Over time, this early design evolved through multiple generations into the advanced, battery-powered unit we offer today.

The History of the SideLyer

From Grassroots Innovation to State-Of-The-Art Engineering

Through years of clinical experience, Quest Inc. learned that:

  • Pressure ulcers develop quickly without consistent repositioning

  • Residents cannot always express pain or discomfort

  • Social isolation worsens when individuals are confined to beds

The SideLyer was engineered to solve these problems:

  • Button-controlled, motorized repositioning replaces strain-intensive manual lifts

  • Precise angles support comfort, circulation, and skin integrity

  • Elevated positions allow residents to engage and interact at eye level

  • Flexible positioning supports therapy, activities, and community inclusion

  • Improved consistency helps avoid the devastating wounds described in the video—including tunneling injuries that formerly took months or years to heal

Families report remarkable outcomes—from increased engagement to faster healing to visibly improved quality of life.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to reduce pressure ulcers for individuals with limited mobility while protecting the well-being of their caregivers. We help healthcare facilities eliminate preventable pressure injuries and reduce caregiver injuries from manual repositioning. By providing advanced motorized repositioning, we enhance operational efficiency, reduce burnout, and support dignity and independence for individuals who cannot reposition themselves.

Why SideLyer Matters

Clinically Proven Outcomes. Across hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, ICFs, and residential homes, the SideLyer has demonstrated:

  • 10× fewer pressure injuries in immobile patients

  • 7× fewer pressure injuries in nursing homes compared to national averages

  • Improved compliance with repositioning schedules

  • Fewer caregiver injuries, reduced fatigue, and lower turnover

Elevated Patient Experience

SideLyer does more than reposition patients—it promotes dignity and connection. Raised and angled positions allow individuals to interact with staff and peers, participate in activities, and avoid the prolonged isolation Quest Inc.’s caregivers describe as emotionally and socially harmful.

Our Commitment to Caregivers

Repositioning is one of the most physically demanding tasks in healthcare. SideLyer reduces exposure to awkward lifting postures that cause musculoskeletal injuries, protecting staff and supporting a healthier, more sustainable care environment.

Partnerships

Reduce pressure ulcers for individuals with limited mobility while protecting the well-being of their caregivers. We partner with intermediate care facilities, nursing homes, physical therapists, other healthcare facilities, families, care providers, and clients, to help eliminate preventable pressure injuries and reduce workforce injuries caused by manual repositioning. Through advanced motorized repositioning, we enhance operational efficiency, decrease staff burnout, and support patient dignity.

What problem was the SideLyer created to solve?

SideLyer was built to address two critical challenges:

  • Preventing pressure injuries in individuals unable to reposition themselves

Watch our story:

How did the SideLyer originate?

The SideLyer began over a decade ago when a night-shift nurse at Quest Inc. recognized that residents who couldn’t reposition themselves were experiencing preventable pressure injuries—and caregivers were being injured performing manual lifts. She and her carpenter husband built the first handcrafted SideLyer from wood, made in multiple sizes to fit residents’ needs.

These early prototypes were personalized with colors, stickers, trays, and storage—evolving into a beloved tool that improved safety, comfort, and engagement. Over time, this simple idea grew into a patented motorized system engineered to industry standards.

Who is The SideLyer Company?

The SideLyer Company is a mission-driven healthcare innovation organization dedicated to preventing pressure injuries and protecting the well-being of caregivers. Our roots trace back to Quest Inc., a Florida nonprofit that has supported individuals with developmental disabilities for over 60 years. The SideLyer began as a grassroots solution inside one of Quest Inc.’s intermediate care facilities and has since grown into a clinically trusted medical device used nationwide.
