How do we get started with SideLyer?
+
Families in California can start by scheduling a virtual demo with our team from the
comfort of their homes. During the demo, you can see SideLyer in action and ask any questions about how it
might support your loved one’s care. After the demo, you have the option to try SideLyer for 90 days free to
see how it fits into your daily care routine.
Is SideLyer covered by insurance?
+
SideLyer is frequently available through insurance, depending on eligibility. The retail price is $11,000 when
insurance coverage applies or $6,900 for families without insurance. Our team is ready to assist families in
understanding their coverage options and estimating what the final cost may be based on individual
circumstances.
Can families in California rent SideLyer instead of purchasing it?
+
Yes. Families in California who do not wish to purchase SideLyer can rent it instead. The rental fee is $550
per month, and the arrangement requires a minimum rental period of 13 months.
When should we use SideLyer in a care plan?
+
SideLyer is commonly used when a loved one is unable to reposition themselves or requires consistent
assistance to remain in safe positions throughout the day and reduce pressure. Many care plans emphasize
regular repositioning to protect vulnerable areas of the body and promote healthy circulation. SideLyer
simplifies this process by enabling caregivers to make precise adjustments using easy motorized controls,
ensuring comfort while supporting skin health and daily care routines.
How do pressure ulcers/pressure sores form in immobile patients?
+
Pressure ulcers frequently form over time when multiple physical factors converge. Restricted movement,
excessive moisture, friction, and delicate skin all contribute to the likelihood of injury. These wounds often
begin as small areas of irritation but can become more severe if pressure continues on the same spot.
Caregivers and families focus on consistent repositioning and supportive surfaces to help prevent the
development of bed sores.
What happens if an open sore develops on the skin?
+
When an open wound forms, protecting the area and supporting the body’s natural repair process is essential.
This often includes diligent wound care, keeping the skin clean and dry, and ensuring that surrounding healthy
tissue does not experience additional pressure.
Can pressure ulcers become life-threatening if they are not treated?
+
In serious cases, pressure injuries can advance into deep ulcers that affect the layers of tissue beneath the
skin. As wounds worsen, areas of damaged tissue may become necrotic, which can slow healing and increase the
risk of complications. Treatment often involves specialized wound care, where clinicians carefully remove dead
tissue and monitor the area closely. Preventing pressure injuries early can help avoid these more severe
outcomes.
How does pressure relief help prevent infection and skin damage?
+
Consistently relieving pressure allows blood to circulate properly to areas under strain, helping protect skin
that is vulnerable to injury. By reducing pressure and closely monitoring common risk factors, caregivers can
prevent infections and stop minor injuries from becoming more serious. When support for proper positioning is
maintained, it safeguards the affected skin and gives the body the time it needs to recover before severe
damage develops.
What happens if dead tissue develops in a pressure wound?
+
When dead tissue develops in a pressure wound, it indicates that the area has suffered damage from prolonged
pressure and inadequate blood flow. Effective treatment focuses on supporting the healing process, protecting
the surrounding skin, and improving positioning to encourage recovery. Minimizing pressure on vulnerable areas
also reduces the risk of new pressure injuries developing elsewhere.
SideLyer provides caregivers with a safe and consistent way to reposition loved ones, helping lower the
likelihood of bed sores.
How did the SideLyer originate?
+
The SideLyer began more than a decade ago when a night-shift nurse at Quest Inc. noticed that residents who
could not reposition themselves were developing preventable pressure injuries, while caregivers were
experiencing strain and injury from repeated manual lifts. Together with her husband, a skilled carpenter,
she created the first handcrafted SideLyer using wood, carefully building it in different sizes to meet the
needs of each resident.
These early versions were customized with colors, stickers, trays, and storage features, gradually becoming
a trusted and well-loved tool that improved safety, comfort, and daily engagement. Over time, this initial
concept evolved into a patented motorized system designed to meet industry standards and modern care
requirements.
What is Quest Inc., and how is it related to SideLyer?
+
Quest Inc. is a nonprofit organization with more than 60 years of experience providing housing, care, and
support for individuals with developmental disabilities. SideLyer was developed within Quest Inc.’s
residential care program to address the challenges of pressure ulcers, enhance quality of life for
residents, and reduce the risk of caregiver injuries. Today, Quest Inc. continues to play an essential role
by offering decades of hands-on insight that guide SideLyer’s design, safety features, and clinical purpose.

What impact has SideLyer had on individuals in California and their families?
+
Families across California have observed meaningful improvements in comfort, a reduction in pressure
wounds, and increased social engagement for their loved ones. Many share a sense of relief knowing their
family member is safer, more comfortable, and properly positioned throughout each day.
As one Quest Inc. parent shared, “Most of her pressure is not where she can have a skin breakdown. It takes
the pressure off the body.”
Other families have explained that wounds they expected to take months to heal improved much faster, thanks
to the consistency of proper repositioning.
